St Mary’s is located in the geographical centre of Wortham, between the five hamlets of Long Green, the Marsh, Magpie Green, the Ling and the Brook. It has the largest round tower in England and the church is spacious, having both north and south aisles and clerestory windows which help to illuminate the interior. Beautiful carvings, mostly illustrating verses from Psalm 104, adorn the ancient nave pews and the altar incorporates panels from the old rood screen, with fragments of medieval glass hanging in the east window above it.

St Mary’s is currently under observation for structural movement, with tell tales on a number of cracks and at some point a decision will be made on how we move forward with repairs. The church has a car park, a small kitchen area and a WC, all of which have proved invaluable over the years. The Friends of Wortham Church’ was established in 1995 to provide financial support for the church fabric and has raised funds tirelessly ever since for repairs and improvements to the church. They are responsible for a beautiful new stained glass window celebrating the centenary of the diocese which falls this year. Click here for “The official website for The Friends of Wortham Church.

At services people assist with readings, intercessions, the chalice, sidespeople and coffee duties and others help with flower arranging, cleaning and churchyard maintenance. Annually, filled shoeboxes are collected for the Samaritan’s Purse Christmas appeal and where possible Fairtrade goods are used in church. We worship and work well with the other parishes and have strong historical links with Burgate, sharing a school and having a joint Parish Council.

The population includes many young families and retired people. There are large areas of common land and the Ling is coloured yellow with gorse in spring, and mauve in late summer by the heather. There is a well‐supported Village Hall and Sports Pavilion, providing homes for the 27 clubs and societies based in the village.

The primary school is thriving with 93 pupils and has good links with the church. A recent Ofsted report rated the school as ‘Outstanding’. There is an electronic newsletter, WOBUL (Wortham and Burgate Letter) and a ‘Welcome Pack’ is delivered to all new residents.
St Mary’s has a page on the village website www.onesuffolk.co.uk/WorthamandBurgatePC.
