St Mary of Pity is a 14th century decorated gothic church building that is well maintained. It is centrally heated with a kitchen area and toilet. The church hall is within 100 yards of the church. The village is divided into two areas of common land. There are about 15 children living in the parish. Pre-school education is accommodated locally with pre-school groups and a Montessori nursery close by.
Burgate has many social and cultural groups such as the Burgate Singers, a choral society which has been in existence for over 30 years, and also an art group. Ballroom dancing and yoga are available in the next village.
Burgate has a thriving church community. There is a weekly “Kettle’s On” at the church hall, a social gathering with as many as 30 people attending. The success of this demonstrates how we seek to identify and meet need in our community. We have a very active Friends of Burgate Church which does an enormous amount of fundraising. Events include men’s breakfast, walkers’ lunches, village quiz and barbecues. We hold a church fete and also an annual Christmas bazaar in the church. The parish magazine is distributed throughout the village.
There is an electronic newsletter, WOBUL (Wortham and Burgate Letter).
St Mary’s has a page on the village website www.onesuffolk.co.uk/WorthamandBurgatePC.
